P&O Australia has confirmed it will be running a State of Origin cruise in 2016 for the first time, a sailing which will ferry rugby fans from Brisbane to Sydney for the big game.

Following the success of its specialist Melbourne Cup cruise, P&O Australia is in the process of creating a series of sports-themed itineraries designed to transport passengers to some of the biggest sporting events on the calendar — starting with the series opener, the State of Origin cruise on June 1 2016.

Priced at just $799 person, the first State of Origin cruise will depart from Brisbane on 28 May, and will include a one-night stay in Sydney on the night of the match, as well as port calls in Moreton Island and Newcastle. This seven-night sailing aboard Pacific Dawn includes a bronze-class entry ticket to the State of Origin game, plus transfers to and from the stadium on match day.

During the cruise, former Origin players will be aboard to answer questions from rugby fans, and there’ll also be the chance to take photographs beside a replica of the State of Origin trophy.

Sture Myrmell, president of P&O Australia, said: “Whether or not the Maroons take home the Origin trophy in 2016, this cruise is a big win for Queensland footy fans. As well as transport, accommodation, food and entertainment, guests on the inaugural State of Origin cruise will be getting some of the hottest tickets in town included as part of their cruise fare – it’s seriously great value. Pacific Dawn is Queensland’s ship so we expect to see a lot of Maroons fans coming onboard and cheering on their team from Brisbane to Sydney and back.”

The State of Origin cruise is one of many new itineraries added to P&O Australia’s 2016 cruise schedule. To browse all of the latest cruise deals from P&O, visit the Cruise1st Australia website, here.
