Princess Cruises to Celebrate 50th Birthday with Nostalgic Cruise

0

Celebrating their 50th anniversary next year, the Princess Cruises team are planning a series of special events to mark the occasion. Alongside a New Year’s appearance in the Rose Parade in January, the cruise line is planning a special Mexican cruise on 3 December, 2015 – exactly 50 years after the first ever Princess Cruises voyage.

In December 1965, Princess Cruises’ founder Stanley McDonald chartered the Princess Patricia from Canadian Pacific Limited for winter cruises through the Mexican Riviera. Although the Princess Patricia soon re-joined the Canadian Pacific Limited fleet, Princess Cruises was born as McDonald ordered specially-designed ships for his charter, beginning with the Princess Italia.

That first cruise will be replicated next year by the Pacific Princess, undertaking a 14 night itinerary very similar to the original cruise. Although the changing landscape means not every detail can be replicated, the cruise will visit many of the same ports including Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Manzanillo alongside original pit stops La Paz and Loreto.

The Pacific Princess is one of the smaller members of the fleet with a capacity of just 670 passengers who will enjoy taking a step back in time, treated to historical commentary and classic activities. Princess Cruises are also planning on inviting some very special surprise guests along with the passengers.

Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises’ president, enthused: “This nostalgic cruise to Mexico will be the perfect finale to what’s sure to be a special 50th anniversary year for Princess. For this significant milestone we couldn’t resist recreating, with some new touches, the very first cruise our company operated. And because the name Pacific Princess is so integral to our company’s history, we wanted to offer the cruise aboard the current ship with this iconic name.”

The special cruise will offer an insight into the third largest cruise line in the world’s humble beginnings from a single ship cruise to a fleet of 18, travelling to some of the world’s most breath-taking, beautiful destinations.
