Cruise Industry Boosts New Zealand Economy

Throughout the 2013/14 season, the New Zealand cruise industry contributed a record $365.3m to the country’s economy. This figure is expected to continue rising in the coming years as more and more people are enjoying cruises to Australasia and around the island of New Zealand.

More than 200,000 cruise passengers journeyed to New Zealand during the season on 33 different cruise ships over 119 separate voyages. This has hugely benefitted the economy and helped to support nearly 7,000 New Zealand jobs.

Many of the ports of New Zealand now have the capacity to support larger cruise ships, giving more and more passengers access to the country every year. Early estimations for the coming years suggest the New Zealand cruise industry could be worth $373.4m during the 2014/15 season and $421.4m in 2015/16.

General Manager of Cruise New Zealand, Raewyn Tan, suggests the increased ship capacities will support this growth, with the same number of voyagers taking place over the coming years but with larger passenger numbers. The average passenger capacity per ship is expected to jump from 1,600 to 2,000 over the next two years.

This all supports the Australian cruise industry which was recently revealed to be the fastest growing cruise market in the world.

Carnival Australia CEO, Ann Sherry, enthused: “The great news is that businesses both small and large are benefiting from the surge in cruising. It is extremely satisfying to know that beyond the positive economic data are real people; tour operators, cafe and restaurant owners and taxi drivers, all are benefiting from cruise industry growth.”
