Azamara Club Cruises has become the first cruise line to utilise virtual reality technology, releasing a specially developed app that allows users to explore a number of different environments they’re likely to encounter on an Azamara cruise holiday.
The new app, which has been dubbed Azamara 3di, features a number of unique, 360-degree videos that cruise passengers can navigate thanks to virtual reality technology – either on their smartphone, tablet, computer or via a special VR headset.
In a unique move for the cruise industry, Azamara used Facebook’s Oculus Rift technology to create the virtual reality video series. This tech allows the user to explore the video as if they were really there, and Azamara hope this will help new and existing cruise-goers gain valuable insight into what is available during a cruise holiday.
Among the VR videos currently available on the Azamara 3di app, passengers can explore a stateroom on-board an Azamara ship; zip line through a Costa Rican rainforest; sail through the famous Panama Canal; and enjoy a moonlit carriage ride in Cartagena. Each video is designed to fully immerse the viewer in the cruise experience, and accurately recreate the sense of being on a cruise.
Larry Pimentel, president of Azamara Club Cruises, said: “When perfecting our first App, providing this sensory journey was not negotiable; we didn’t want to launch an App just to have an App.
“As we continue to redefine the luxury cruise experience for the next generation, we need to reach them in meaningful ways and provide information to them where they are looking for it. Having an App is important, but more important is the content it provides.”
Currently, the app is exclusively available on iOS devices, but the line hasn’t ruled out an Android version being released in the future. To download the Azarama 3di App, visit the App Store on your iOS device.
