Australian Cruise Industry Set for Record-Breaking Summer

The Australian cruise holiday industry is going from strength to strength and is expected to surpass all records this summer season with a total of 642 port calls. A record-breaking 36 ships will be cruising Australian waters between 1 October 2014 and 30 April 2015, many of which will be visiting Australia for the very first time.

The number of ports is also increasing to include cities and regional towns such as Geelong, Port Hedland, Albany, Busselton, Eden and Esperance.

Ships making their maiden trip to Australia include the MSC Orchestra, arriving in Cairns in March, and Carnival Legend, making the trip to Sydney in September. A total of 253 round-trips will be made from the major ports of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle during the upcoming summer season, a significant increase on the 202 made last summer.

Seven of the ships are based in Australia waters year-round with 11 visiting just for the summer and the remaining 18 cruising between a wide range of different regions.

Brett Jardine, CLIA Australasia General Manager, enthused:

“This summer we’ll be seeing growth across the board – not only have the number of member line ships cruising our waters risen from 34 to 36, the total number of Australian calls by those ships has risen from 588 last year to 642 this year. In addition, the number of roundtrip cruises has also increased significantly, which means there’ll be greater economic returns all round.

“It’s also wonderful to see there’ll be 38 maiden port calls, up from 17 last year. So many maiden visits, particularly in regional towns, means that more holidaymakers are being introduced to more parts of Australia, which is great news for local communities.

“Cruising generates economic benefits for Australia 12 months of the year but there is always a peak over the summer period so it’s fabulous that we’ll be hitting a new record over the coming months.

As we reported earlier in the year, the Australian cruise market is the fastest growing in the industry, with more and more Australians taking to the seas every year.

Hotly anticipated highlights of the summer season include the Carnival Legend’s maiden voyage in Australian waters, and the Queen Mary 2’s Royal Rendezvous with the Queen Victoria in Sydney Harbour next March.
