About Holland America

Holland America Line – or Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij, as it was originally known in its homeland of the Netherlands – started out way back in 1873 as a shipping and passenger line.

It offered its first actual passenger cruise in 1895, but the second one didn’t come until 1910. After stopping its transatlantic passenger trade in 1971 and selling its cargo division in 1973, it became exclusively a passenger cruise line.

The company now operates 15 cruise ships over 7 continents. Its ships include:

  • MS Statendam
  • MS Maasdam
  • MS Ryndam
  • MS Veendam
  • MS Rotterdam
  • MS Volendam
  • MS Zaandam
  • MS Amsterdam
  • MS Zuiderdam
  • MS Oosterdam
  • MS Westerdam
  • MS Noordam
  • MS Eurodam
  • MS Nieuw Amsterdam
  • MS Prinsendam

There is another ship, yet to be named, that will cruise for Holland America Line from late 2015.

What are the ships like?

With so many different ships, spanning five different ‘classes’, there’s a lot of variety on offer. However, there are some common themes across all Holland America ships.

The company’s ‘Signature of Excellence’ programme, established in 2003, set out to upgrade all the ships and bring them up to modern standards. This led to all ships gaining a number of top-class amenities, including the Pinnacle Grill restaurant, the Neptune Lounge (an exclusive area for suite guests), the demonstration kitchens of the Culinary Arts Centre, improved amenities, better facilities for children and all-round improved dining. Upgrades are ongoing, and more recently some of the ships have gained a new bar lounge, a Showroom, a pool area with big LED screen and more.
