Hong Kong welcomed an influx of the world’s leading cruise line figureheads when it threw open the doors of the Cruise Shipping Asia-Pacific exhibition earlier this month. The annual two-day event was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, which hosts some of the largest industry events on the planet.

This particular exhibition shone the spotlight on the Asian cruise industry’s fastest emerging sectors, including itinerary development, market potential, shipbuilding, infrastructure, refurbishment and sourcing passengers from Asian regions. 2014 marked the fourth instalment of the exhibition, its ongoing popularity reflecting the rapidly growing Asian cruise market.

Abundance of VIP guests

The event kicked off with a welcome address from Michael Duck, Global Maritime Director and EVP at UBM Asia Ltd. Anthony Lau, Executive Director of Hong Kong Tourism Board, gave a keynote speech focussing on the future of the Asian cruise market. While Christine Duffy, President and CEO of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), and Zinan Liu, CLIA North Asia Chairman and China/North Asia President at Royal Caribbean Cruises, were also on hand to lend their expertise.

Tailor made itinerary of events

One of the standout presentations, ‘The State of the Cruise Industry in Asia,’ explored the booming Asian market. An intensive two-day travel agent training programme helped agents harness the potential of Asian cruise tourism, while a complimentary one hour Cruise Line/Port Interface workshop was designed to help drive port investment and development within the Pan-Asia cruise region.

In addition to the conferences, workshops and training session, there was also a specially curated showcase exhibition. Here, event attendees could explore an array of major sectors including destinations, port and terminal development, shore excursion services, itinerary planning, ship operations, onboard facilities and hotel partnerships.

It’s an incredibly exciting time for the Asian cruise industry, and events such as the Cruise Shipping Asia-Pacific exhibition are specially designed to help the market boom.
