About Noumea

The capital of New Caledonia, travellers are drawn to Noumea for its picturesque beauty. Situated on a hilly headland in the South-West Pacific Ocean, it boasts a tropical climate and more sunshine days than any other Pacific Island capital. Noumea is famed for its white sandy beaches and has the second longest coral reef in the world.

A multi-cultural community, Noumea manages to be both laid back and sophisticated, casual and cosmopolitan. Noumea is not yet a major tourist destination, so you can explore and soak up the atmosphere without battling the crowds.

There are many trips, places of interest and excursions to be had in Noumea, so what follows is just a taster. The Aquarium des Lagons was founded in 1956 by biologist Rene Catala. It boasts a fantastic array of fish and other aquatic life forms found in and around Noumea, all housed in huge tanks and realistic surroundings. Don’t miss the spectacular living coral displays.

Nature lovers will also enjoy the Parc Zoologique et Forestier, a 74 mile zoological and botanical gardens, located high above the city. You will see native species such a parakeets, cagou, notou and rousette (fruit bat) as well as non-native species such as monkeys, baboons and birds. There is also a geological museum by the entrance.

A real must-visit is the Place de Cocotiers (Coconut Square). The heart of the city, lined with centuries-old trees, this main central square is a bustling hive of activity. Regular concerts and street markets take place here with stalls selling fresh produce, cakes, arts and crafts. You often see traditional live music and dance being performed and will regularly see locals playing games of chess in the square.

If you seek the relaxation of a beach then you couldn’t be in a better place. The Baie de Citrons Beach is sheltered by huge palm trees, and has a large expanse of white sand and clear, shallow water to cool off in. It is known as the best place in Noumea to go swimming.

Cruise lines currently sailing to Noumea include Carnival Cruises, P&O and Royal Caribbean International.
