Why go on a Lisbon cruise?

Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and the oldest in Western Europe – pre-dating other modern cities such as London and Paris. Lisbon is small for a European capital and is split into three main districts – Bairro, Baixa Alto and Alfama.

Alfama is the atmospheric old town, steeped in history. Explore the ancient cobblestone streets and take in the medieval buildings and wrought-iron balconies draped in flowers. With a mix of small shops and bars there are plenty of opportunities for you to take the weight off your feet and appreciate the scenery. Alfama has a very charming, traditional feel and as you explore this district you may even see Portuguese women selling fresh fish from their doorsteps.

Baixa Alto is the heart of the city – a modern district full of busy streets packed with shops, bars and restaurants.

A steep climb from Baixa Alto is Bairro – or you may wish to use the 100 year old lift (Elevador do Carmo) which is located near Rossio Square. This is another historic district with narrow cobbled streets, but it comes alive at night as the centre of Lisbon nightlife.

Spread across rolling hills overlooking the Rio Tejo, Lisbon is a stunning European city packed with museums, monasteries and gothic cathedrals and is sure to be a highlight of your European cruise.

Cruise lines currently sailing through Lisbon include Celebrity Cruises, P&O Cruises and Royal Caribbean International.
