Cruise Holiday Travel Guide: Kotor

An unexpected favourite destination for many of our travellers is Kotor, Montenegro. This picturesque coastal town is a feature on many of our cruises around the Mediterranean.

Take a look at the latest deals on cruises visiting Kotor here, or keep reading to find out more about the town.

About Kotor

Kotor is a beautiful historic town located just off the south coast of Montenegro. It is located in the only natural fjord of its kind in the world. Indeed, your first impressions will be awe and wonder as you approach the town in between rolling hills and cloud-topped mountains. It really has to be seen to be believed.

Once a Roman settlement, the Old Town is surrounded by ancient walls and this is where you will want to spend much of your time here. Old Kotor was built like a maze to help protect against intruders, so it’s easy to get lost if you don’t pay attention to your surroundings!

Cars can’t get into the old town, so it is very quiet and easy to imagine how the town might have been back in ancient times. You’ll find a multitude of street markets, cathedrals, churches and much more here.

Perhaps the most impressive building here is St Tryphon’s Cathedral, first built in the 11th century and since reconstructed after earthquakes. Meanwhile St Nicholas Church is the biggest Orthodox church in the old town, and is well worth a visit.

Another favourite excursion for many visitors is the climb up the Upper Town walls – 1,350 steps somewhat resembling the Great Wall of China. You’ll be rewarded with fantastic views of the town and beyond.

There’s also a wide range of restaurants, cafés and food stalls both in the Old Town and outside.
