Cruise Holiday Travel Guide: Katakolon

0

The small Greek town of Katakolon is a regular feature on our Mediterranean cruises – and despite its size, it’s one of the more memorable destinations. You can explore history in beautiful surroundings during your time here.

Find out more about Katakolon below, or head over to our Mediterranean cruise deals page for the latest offers.

About Katakolon

On first glance Katakolon is simply a quaint port town in Greece. Home to just 3,000 people, the beach is relatively small, and you’ll find little more than a few cafes, restaurants and shops along the waterfront.

It’s a lovely place to visit, but it’s fair to say the main reason people visit Katakolon is to reach Olympia – the ancient site of the original Olympic Games.

Olympia is just a 40 minute drive from Katakolon, with regular trips throughout the day. Today all that’s left of the old Olympia are ancient ruins, but as you stand by the enormous columns you will feel a sense of how magnificent the place would have looked all those thousands of years ago. This is one of those places where it’s definitely worth getting a tour guide to really paint a picture of the place.

While you’re there be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, which features a wide range of fascinating artifacts from Ancient Greece.

Another popular excursion around Katakolon is a visit to the Mercouri Estate, a local vineyard, where you might even get to taste a few wines if you ask nicely!

Cruise lines currently visiting Katakolon include Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises.
