Why you should choose a Canary Islands cruise

The Canary Islands are a group of 13 islands located off the West Coast of Africa, although they are Spanish territory and mostly populated by people of Spanish descent. In order of size, the Canaries consists of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, La Graciosa, Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste.

The Canary Islands boast warm temperatures all year round. High temperatures rarely dip below 20 degrees centigrade, and edge closer to 30 between July and September. The pleasant climate means a cruise to the Canary Islands is perfect even during the winter, when other parts of the northern hemisphere might be getting cold.

There’s simply so much to see here, from the beautiful volcanic island of Lanzarote to the pristine beaches of Tenerife; the cobbled streets of Gran Canaria to the sand dunes of Fuerteventura. It’s a great one for fans of geology, with fascinating rock formations, beautiful foliage as well as vast rocky expanses amongst the many things you’ll get to see.

The Canary Islands are also home to a fascinating range of wildlife. Amongst the islands’ many inhabitants are (unsurprisingly) canaries, geckos, giant lizards, big-eared bats, quails, sharks, jellyfish, eels, turtles, dolphins, whales and many many more.

The Islands are an ideal destination whether you’re a fan of relaxation, long walks or partying the night away (or perhaps a combination of the three!). The many beaches always prove popular with sun-worshippers, but there are also many walking routes for the more adventurous traveller. And venture into certain parts of Tenerife, Lanzarote and some others and you will find a thriving nightlife.

Cruise operators currently offering Canary Islands cruises include Royal Caribbean Cruises, P&O Cruises, Azamara Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and Princess Cruises.
