A new hull mural revealed on Norwegian Getaway

A fantastic new hull design, specially created for Norwegian Getaway, has been revealed in Miami.

The hull design was created by the famous Cuban-American Miami based artist and muralist David “LEBO” Le Batard, who is best known for his fantastic murals, sculptures and live paintings. The design itself is based on a tropical theme which draws upon imagery from Le Batard’s hometown. According to the artist, the hull is primarily based on a mermaid, a classic image associated with the sea. With its striking new hull revealed, Norwegian Getaway is set to homeport from January 1914.

Norwegian Getaway will be Miami’s ship and, therefore, we wanted to ensure that her hull was designed by an artist with strong ties to Miami and the Latin community”

“LEBO’s incredible design reflects all of the elements that Miami is known for – sea, sun and paradise.

“This artwork will surely make Norwegian Getaway an iconic part of the Miami skyline when she arrives as Miami’s largest year-round ship in 2014.”

— Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan.

About David Le Batard:

David Le Batard was originally born in New York, but he grew up elsewhere in South Florida. His work is influenced by his heritage and upbringing, particularly his Cuban roots (his parents were both émigrés from Cuba). What made Le Batard a great choice for Norwegian is that his work often features the ocean and sea as another influence! LEBO style is as striking as it is original and he is credited with the creation of Post-modern Cartoon Expressionism. This style combines cartoon imagery with different balances of colour and linear compositions.

Le Batard’s work is known around the world and he has exhibited in many famous galleries throughout America. His murals and his public art can be seen in Miami’s Calle Ocho and in Uptown New Orleans. His works can also be seen in Detroit and in downtown San Francisco. Alongside Norwegian, LIBO has worked with Harley Davidson, Ferrari, Adidas, Calvin Klein and Gibson Guitars. No stranger to working with different materials, such as fabric, stained glass and furniture, LIBO can now add cruise ship hull to that list!

LEBO remarked on the project with Norwegian: “When I was asked to design the artwork for Norwegian Getaway, I saw an opportunity to create a prominent image, one that would surely help define the Miami seascape and illustrate the world-class experience that Norwegian Cruise Line has come to stand for,” LEBO said.

“It is truly an honour to have been offered this canvas, as it gives the world an opportunity to see my work in a way few artists ever get to see in their entire lives.”
