Cruising with a Passion for Pineapples!

0

With a delectably juicy texture, a fabulously sweet taste and a host of health benefits, what’s NOT to love about pineapples? In fact, we love them SO much that we’re constantly in search of the finest ‘ananas comosus’ Mother Nature has to offer. And surprise, surprise – cruising is one of the absolute best ways to sample these delicious tropical fruits.

So why are we head over heels for pineapples? Not only do they taste great, but they’re packed full of Vitamin C, are a rich source of manganese (for healthy bones), are great for aiding the digestive system and are a natural source of sugar, without the high calorie count.

So where can you find the crème de la crème of these yellow ovals of goodness? Here’s some of our favourite places to devour pineapples, across the globe.

Philippines

The Philippines is one of the biggest pineapple producers on the planet, with global fresh produce goliaths Del Monte and Dole both owning expansive plantations scattered across the country’s 7,000 islands.

Costa Rica

Taste Caribbean bliss by seeking out pineapples in lush, rainforest strewn Costa Rica. The Central American nation supplies 60% of worldwide pineapple exports, thanks to its perfect storm of tropical climate and rich, fertile soil.

Brazil

Find your inner party animal and sink your teeth into a Brazilian pineapple. Just as sweet, juicy as indulgent as their country of origin, Brazilian pineapples are thought to have roots in the Amazonic basin.

Thailand

Celebrated as the ‘Land of Smiles,’ Thailand is home to wonderfully friendly locals, and lusciously juicy pineapples! It’s the perfect place to watch the sun set with a plate of pad Thai, a papaya salad and of course, an icy pineapple shake!

As cruise ships sail through their itineraries they stock up on fresh produce at ports of call. This means that more often than not, you’ll be served up market fresh local pineapples and other fruits, straight to your table! Or if you prefer, pineapples in the form of piña coladas! Of course, the alternative is exploring a port on foot, tracking down a food market and stocking up on your very own pineapple stash! Don’t forget to barter!
