7 Cruise Ship Fashion Tips for Your Next Adventure at Sea

Any woman will tell you that packing for a cruise holiday is half the fun! With the huge range of different activities and experiences on offer, it’s essential to have an array of outfits for every occasion. Unfortunately, heading off on holidays means that you don’t have the luxury of throwing open your wardrobe and putting together the perfect look. As such, it pays to put some careful thought into your packing strategy. To help you out, we’ve put together a list of seven essential outfits that should make an appearance in the suitcase of every cruiser.

1. Formal night

Depending on the cruise line, the definition of formal attire can vary quite considerable. Make sure you do your research beforehand and determine just how fancy you’ll be expected to look! For example on a Crystal Cruise formal night, guests will be expected to sport gowns, cocktail dresses or pant suits. Partners must also be looking suitably suave in tuxedos, suits and dinner jackets. If you’re not quite sure, pack an elegant knee length cocktail dress and give yourself the option of dressing it up or down with a selection of jewellery and heels or dress sandals.

2. Poolside chic

You’ll most likely be spending a lot of time by the pool which means that a chic poolside outfit (or five!) is an absolute must. Most cruise lines encourage ‘resort wear’ in public areas and on upmarket lines such as Silversea, you’ll want to be looking at your best. Meet the bar with a sheer kaftan, oversized sunglasses, strappy sandals and wide brimmed hat.

3. Shore excursion

If you’re planning on embarking on shore excursions, make sure you dress appropriately! For example, if you’re heading off on a walking tour of the city, comfortable shoes are an absolute must. Similarly, jungle treks will require full length clothing, kayaking excursions will need a swim suit and so on. The key is to make sure you know what you’re signing up for and plan your outfit accordingly.

4. Smart casual

While most lines do host the occasional formal night, the majority of the time passengers will be sporting smart casual wear. If you’re embarking on a cruise to a sunny destination, lightweight maxi dresses and dress sandals are a great way to look smart yet not too OTT. If you’re more of a winter cruise kind of gal, a smart pair of pants, elegant sleeveless blouse and killer pair of heels will take you from the restaurant to the cocktail bar with ease.

5. Swimwear

For sun oriented destinations, a good inventory of swimwear is non-negotiable. It’s lightweight and relatively small so don’t hold back – better to over pack than under pack when it comes to bikinis! If you’re planning on working on your tan, try to include a few different styles and cuts in order to avoid lines.

6. Day wear

For ambling around the cruise ship you’re going to want to look stylish yet still be comfortable. A pair of shorts is always a good idea and when teamed with a cute t-shirt of tank top makes for a versatile everyday look. Casual dresses are ideal for pool to cocktail bar transitions and a pair of pretty sandals will never look out of place.

7. Workout

Determined to keep fit while at-sea? Don’t forget to pack a workout outfit! Most cruise ships offer passengers state-of-the-art gyms as well as added extras such as yoga, pilates and even personal training.

By following this simple guide, you should be well on your way to packing like a pro! Looking for somewhere to flaunt your perfectly put together outfits? Cruise 1st has a fantastic selection of package deals from all the leading lines!
