Cruise Miss on Dining Delights Aboard the Emerald Princess

In October 2014 I embarked on my first ever cruise with Princess Cruises, a Canary Islands voyage aboard Emerald Princess (which is relocating to Australia in 2016!). I had several things at the top of my “must do” list for this ship and trying the food in the Crown Grill was one of them.

Food has always been a massively important part of any cruise, but in recent years the competition between lines to offer the best and most innovative speciality restaurants has been fierce. We have The White Room aligned with P&O Cruises, Jamie’s Italian with Royal Caribbean, Regent Seven Seas PRIME 7 American Steakhouse, Cagney’s Steakhouse aboard the Norwegian Cruise Lines fleet and a whole lot more – It was only right that I gave Princess Cruises speciality options a try, so I did, and I wished I had gone back for more!

The first speciality experience was the Crown Grill which is charged at $25 per person and is worth every single cent! There was so much choice for appetisers, soups/salads and main courses, let me share some of them with you: Pan-Seared Pacific Scallops, Black Tiger Prawn and Papaya Salpicon, Shrimp and Pancetta Bisque, Marinated Goat’s Cheese and Heirloom Tomato Salad, 12 ounce New York Strip, 22 ounce Porterhouse, New Zealand Double Lamb Chops, 4oz Maine Lobster Tails and Grilled Tiger Prawns in Whiskey, Chilli & Garlic Marinade.

The steak dishes came with a choice of two side dishes which included Garlic & Herb French Fries, Creamed Spinach (my favourite), Loaded Baked Idaho Potato and Grilled Asparagus. Not all dishes came with these side options but I got the impression that if you really wanted one, regardless of what you ordered, you could have one.

I went for the Scallops to start which were delicious! The Shrimp and Pancetta Bisque next and then the 12 ounce New York Strip which was cooked to absolute perfection, my side dish choices were the creamed spinach and fries. It was so good! It really was! I enjoy the steak restaurants onboard and I have to say that the Crown Grill was one of my best experiences! I really do wish I had gone back and tried the lobster tails.

The second speciality option that I tried on Emerald Princess was Sabatini’s – another heavenly cuisine experience and again incurs a charge of $25 per person.

As the name would suggest, the theme here was Italian. To start I went with the Calamari Fritti – crisp fried baby squid served with a garlic dip – this was actually the first time I had ever tried squid and I really did enjoy it, although it would never be my first choice if there were prawns or scallops on the menu. Next was the pasta dish, I went with Spaghetti allo Scoglio, which was basically a seafood pasta. I asked for mine minus the mussels and it was superb! I could have eaten it three times over. Finally my main course would bring me the lobster I had been so eager to try, ‘Tris d’Aragosta, which was lobster three ways: lobster tail, lobster orzotto and lobster bisque. The lobster tail was very nice indeed but I wasn’t a huge fan of the orzotto pasta.

Overall the dining experiences aboard Emerald Princess were very impressive, even the main dining room offered some absolutely delicious dishes, including a scallop option that was possibly the best I have ever had. If you are cruising with Princess soon then please try the Crown Grill, I promise that you will not be disappointed – just make sure you loosen your belt by a notch or two!
