In a bizarre turn of events, Hollywood movie star Owen Wilson has become the new face of P&O Australia, starring in a series of surreal short films to advertise the line’s soon-to-be-launched new vessels, Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden.
Alongside an ensemble cast of famous Aussie actresses – including Kendal Rae – the much-loved American actor stars in three three-minute short films for P&O entitled ‘The Conspicuous Awakening of Owen Wilson’. Directed by Tom Dey, who has previously worked with Owen on 2000’s Shanghai Noon, the clips set out to showcase P&O’s new ships in a comedic, and at times weird, way.
Part One (embedded below) finds Wilson laid flat on his back in the ‘Blue Room’ – an elegant cocktail bar which features aboard both of P&O’s new ships – where he is confronted by a beautiful blonde Australian smiling down at him. After enquiring after her ‘beautiful’ language, Wilson receives a ‘phenomenal’ cocktail and comments on the ‘velvety’ softness of the Blue Room’s furnishings.
As the short film progresses, Wilson begins piecing together past events in a series of dreamlike flashbacks, which show him enjoying other aspects of the new P&O ships alongside fellow cruise passengers. The other two clips follow a similar narrative, showcasing other aspects of the new vessels whilst alluding to the idea that being aboard a P&O cruise ship is like no other place on earth.
Published on promotional site, befreeowen.com.au, P&O hope the short film series will capture a new audience of potential cruise-goers before the launch of its new ships, Aria and Eden, on November 25 2015.
Simon Cheng, P&O Cruises head of marketing and distribution, enthused: “We’re thrilled that Owen was able to channel his inner ‘cruiseling’ and showcase some of the remarkable features these ships have to offer. Hollywood, like Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden, exudes style and sophistication so it was to Hollywood we looked to help launch these ships.
“We wanted the right star – someone easy-going and lots of fun, just like the experience Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden will offer. In Owen we found our perfect partner.”
While Wilson will not be present at the launch of P&O’s new ships, the event promises to be star-studded and entertaining in its own right – with musical performances from the likes of The Veronicas, Jessica Mauboy, Justice Crew and Samantha Jade.
Offering a number of exciting cruise sailings direct from Sydney, Aria and Eden look set to become a popular choice among new and repeat P&O customers. To find out more about the new P&O ships, check back with the Cruise1st Australia team soon for further details as they develop.
