Celebrity Cruises made history this month as it appointed the industry’s first American female captain. At 37 years of age, Kate McCue will be the cruise sector’s first ever woman to get behind the wheel of a mega-ton cruise ship. The San Francisco native will take to the helm of Celebrity Summit and be held responsible for the safety of its 2,158 guests and 952 crew members.
“Becoming the first female American captain of a cruise ship has been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember,” says Captain McCue. “The honour is amplified by being the first at a company like Celebrity Cruises. The cruise industry is ever-evolving, from the ships and the itineraries, to our guests’ expectations for vacation experiences. Celebrity has a history of delivering on each of these, and I am thrilled to be a part of it. I look forward to working with an amazing team and the exceptional leadership who bring the Celebrity Cruises vision to life every day.”
Girl power on the high seas
It took 15 years of experience for McCue to work her way to the top, and now all her hard work has paid off. Throughout the course of her career she has overseen a myriad of international sailing itineraries, from Europe, Asia and Australia to the Caribbean, Alaska and Pacific Northwest. Of course, McCue hasn’t always enjoyed high ranking positions, with the California Maritime Academy graduate starting off as a humble cadet and deck officer.
The appointment follows in the wake of Lisa Lutoff-Perlo’s recent promotion to President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises. Both moves are a testament to the line’s commitment to advancing the role of women in maritime leadership positions. Needless to say Lutoff-Perlo is delighted to welcome a fellow female to the Celebrity team!
“From the first time I met Kate, I looked forward to this moment, when I could extend my congratulations to her for being such a dynamic and highly respected leader who will continue to pave the way for women in the maritime industry,” she says. “Of all the great moments throughout my career, this is at the top of my list. I am both honoured that Kate accepted this position, and proud of the way our team continues to transform the way people think about Celebrity, and about cruising in general.”
